Episode 5: The Night Journey and Ascension

As an honor and a strengthening after times of hardship, Allah took Prophet Muhammad ﷺ by night from al-Masjid al-Haram in Makkah to al-Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem (the Isra'), then raised him through the heavens (the Mi'raj). Allah said, "Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing" (Qur'an 17:1). In Surah An-Najm, Allah affirms that what he saw was true revelation, not imagination: "Your companion has not strayed, nor has he erred, nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed" (Qur'an 53:2-4). In this magnificent event the five daily prayers were made obligatory — a gift directly from Allah to this nation. The Isra' and Mi'raj became a proof of Allah's power and the honor of the Prophet ﷺ, and a strengthening of faith amid the weight of the struggle. Reflection: after patience through trial, Allah honored His servant with a journey beyond compare. Prayer, made obligatory that night, became the daily ascent of every believer to stand before his Lord. Source & Note: the core of the Isra' rests on Qur'an 17:1, and the truth of the revelation seen on 53:1-18. The details of the Mi'raj through the heavens, the meeting with the prophets, and the imposition of the five prayers come from authentic hadith (e.g. Bukhari no. 3887 & Muslim no. 162); relayed with the marker that these details are from hadith, not from the verse of the Isra' itself.
