Episode 1: Syu'aib Is Sent to the People of Madyan

After earlier nations perished for denying their messengers, Allah sent Prophet Syu'aib (Shu'ayb) to the people of Madyan — a trading town on the caravan routes. Allah said, "And to [the people of] Madyan [We sent] their brother Syu'aib. He said, 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord'" (Qur'an 7:85). Syu'aib is called "their brother" because he rose from among his own people — not a stranger. He knew their character, and they knew him as an honest man before he was raised as a prophet. His first call was the same as that of every prophet: tawhid, devoting worship to Allah alone. The people of Madyan were not poor. They were prosperous, living off a busy trade. Yet that prosperity became their trial: they worshipped others besides Allah, and they fouled their commerce with fraud. So Syu'aib came to mend two things at once — their hearts toward Allah, and their hands in their dealings. Reflection: da'wah always begins from the root, which is tawhid. Before mending conduct, a prophet mends belief; for upright character grows only from a heart that knows and magnifies Allah.
